Class 11: Paternalism
The fact that persons are interpretive works in progress has consequences for how we relate to one another. This week we look at the problem of permissible paternalism, returning to When Things Get Personal.
The main assigned reading for today’s class is chapter 10 of When Things Get Personal.
As always, I have suggested background readings and some also recommended readings for thinking more about related things. This week my suggested background readings are an important paper by Tamar Schapiro and my own paper-length response to Schapiro. Chapter ten parallels my paper so you may find it redundant, but Schapiro is the most sophisticated representative of the alternative that I want to push back against in chapter ten.
